WHY A DOULA?

Doula: (Greek) a woman who serves

What is a Doula?

DONA International’s definition of a doula is, “a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth (the first 12 weeks) to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.”

This support is provided to the partner if one is present as well. A partner could be a spouse, significant other, mother, friend, etc. A doula does not take the place of a partner, but comes alongside both parties to help them be the best team they can be.

Why Hire a Doula?

DONA records that, “Research has proven that having extra labor support, like a birth doula, can help make labor and birth a shorter, easier and healthier experience. Women are less likely to need Pitocin, less likely to have a cesarean birth, less likely to use any pain medication, and more likely to rate their childbirth experience positively. A postpartum doula has proven to reduce postpartum mood disorders and increase breastfeeding success.”

With how many unknowns there are associated with the birth and postpartum timeframe, having someone who is professional yet knows what your desires are and helps you achieve those to the best degree possible is so beneficial. These experiences matter and are remembered for a very long time. It’s worth getting some extra support, even if it’s just a birth or postpartum consult.
